Acana (pronounced: ah-cana) says it’s “trusted by pet lovers everywhere,”[1] is this true?

We did the research, and answer with our due-diligence on it below.

But we’ll also answer whether Acana dog food is good, who makes it and where, how it ultimately rates, and most importantly, where you can buy it.

Now: They say their mission is clear and strong, but have they lived up to this promise over the years?

Let’s find out!

Buying Tip

Compare this product with Amazon Best Sellers in the Best Dog Food category.

When diving into a dog food company’s public-domain information sphere (read as: the info available online), to answer some of the most basic concerns as well as more involved questions, we look at any reputable source mentioning the company that we can get our hands on.

As such, we hope to find the behind the scenes stuff a customer may not be privy to on a normal day-to-day basis.

So: That being said, let’s dive into Acana dog food and see what they’re all about, shall we?

Acana Dog Food Examined

Below we take a further look into this award-winning, biologically appropriate manufacturing, pet food brand, whose self-proclaimed trustworthiness spans more than a quarter century.

Is Acana Dog Food Safe?

Acana says it’s trusted by pet lovers everywhere, should this automatically make it’s dog food safe?

Not according to a recent class action lawsuit (2018) brought against Champion Pet Food (who makes Orijen and Acana). The lawsuit cited problems in certain products such as: lead, heavy Metal Toxicity specifically Arsenic, and Cadmium as well as contamination with Bisphenol A [BPA].[2]

These substances are known to pose health risks to dogs and humans alike.

Specifically, the suit alleges “negligent, reckless, and/or the intentional practice of misrepresenting and failing to fully disclose the presence of heavy metals and toxins in their pet food sold throughout the United States.”[3]

Acana Dog Food Mentioned in the Lawsuit:

  • Acana Regionals Wild Atlantic New England Fish and Fresh Greens Dry Dog Food
  • Acana Regionals Meadowland with Poultry, Freshwater Fish and Eggs Dry Dog Food
  • Acana Regionals Appalachian Ranch with Red Meats and Freshwater Catfish Dry Dog Food
  • Acana Regionals Grasslands with Lamb, Trout, and Game Bird Dry Dog Food
  • Acana Singles Duck and Pear Formula Dry Dog Food
  • Acana Singles Lamb and Apple Formula Dry Dog Food
  • Acana Heritage FreeRun Poultry Formula Dry Dog Food
  • Acana Heritage Freshwater Fish Formula Dry Dog Food

Now: Does this automatically mean Acana is not safe and you should steer away from it? Not exactly.

Why does this not validate that Acana dog food is not safe? Because unlike recalls, a lawsuit is based on a complaint or an accusation only. Meaning anyone can file one!

Worse yet, sometimes the truth of the allegation(s) is not revealed even if the parties reach an agreement/settlement (shocking, we know).

So: Until we hear for certain that Acana has voluntarily decided to recall it’s product(s), as is advised and expected by the Federal Drug Administration, we will give Acana the same benefit of the doubt we give to every pet food company.

This is the nature of being a big business, many complaints, allegations, and lawsuits are brought your way. Thus: Until this claim is verified fully and factually, we will take the responsible and fair approach to the situation at hand and not jump to any conclusions just yet.

Having been around for more than two decades, this is quite an accomplishment and a testament to the companies mission and values.

Acana Dog Food The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that there is a lot of positives about this brand. It’s truly a relief to come across a company that does not outsource the heavy lifting.

Control & Exclusivity

Rather, Acana retains 100% control of it’s entire manufacturing process. It’s no wonder they are one of the safest dog foods currently available. What’s even more impressive is their resolve to stay exclusive and manufacture only products for their two brands, Acana and Orijen.

Not only does this reduce the occurrence of manufacturing errors, but it also lowers the chance of food contamination.

Award Winning

The award winning DogStar kitchens, commitment to customer trust (and not just blind loyalty as with some other brands), fresh ingredient sourcing, and proper vision and mission statements set this company apart from the rest. Thus: One can easily see why they have been so successful.

Need More Reasons?

  • Rich in meat and protein
  • High fresh meat inclusion
  • An abundant variety of fresh meats
  • Appropriate meat ratios
  • Fresh fruit & veggies
  • Free-run poultry and eggs
  • Wild & sustainably caught fish
  • Locally grown botanicals
  • Food innovation

Final Say: The Acana Heritage, Acana Singles, and Acana Regionals are three highly recommended dog food product lines. Attested to by critics across the globe, both human and dog.

Bonus: They’re even in talks with their bag manufacturer to make their dog food bags recyclable. This is turning out to be tricky, and they’ve even considered changing their supplier. Their main concern is that the bags form a complete barrier to protect the food from the outside environment, because they do not use chemical preservatives in their food.

I’m trying Acana with my dog Rufus, 8 year old Irish Terrier. I had been using Dr.Marty’s but I did the math. It amounted to almost five dollars a cup! I couldn’t believe it. And I can’t afford that kind of cost, I guess Dr. Marty has been on Oprah and Martha Stewart so he must be legit or he would never have gotten past their scrutiny. But of course do either of them have to worry if his product costs five bucks a cup. That’s a question I knew the answer to before I asked it. Anyway, I greatly appreciated your review of Acana, and I would be happy to pay for your newsletter. Send info my way.
