Important points to remember

things to remember when feeding mango to your dog

Below are a few things to keep in mind when thinking about feeding mangoes.

Lot’s of fructose: Mangoes are highly concentrated with natural fructose, which is an organic sugar that is much healthier compared to the processed sugars in fruit juices that can lead to weight gain.

However, a dog’s immune system is not engineered to digest large quantities of sugar, so, ensure to give mangoes in moderation.

The best thing to do is to start slow, by giving a slice or two, and then watch out for any stomach discomfort, or other symptoms that may suggest the mango is not well received.

Frozen or fresh? Always give your dog fresh mangoes. These have the most nutrients and also ensure the mangoes are organic.

Frozen and other types of pre-packed mangoes will often lack some nutrients and this will make it unhealthy for your dog. These also contain added sugar or contain a sugar syrup that may not always agree with your dog’s stomach.

Toxic pit: All mangoes contain a toxic pit in the middle and this must always be removed before giving your dog the mango. This is a choking hazard and can lead to intestinal blockage and death.

It also contains the chemical cyanide which may not be too toxic for the dog, but it is still a threat.

If your dog ingests the mango seed, contact the doctor immediately.
