Wellness Pet Food is a company that prides itself on doing things the right way.

They even trademarked terms such as “make every mealtime count,” and “no more boring bowls!”

Wellness also says that healthy doesn’t have to be hard!

Claiming to offer a simple, yet holistic, approach to pet nutrition. One that focuses on real ingredients that lead to real benefits.

Now: Almost sounds to good to be true doesn’t it?

But, don’t worry, we review these claims and much more ahead! ?

Buying Tip

Compare this product with Amazon Best Sellers in the Best Dog Food category.

Why the need for Wellness dog food reviews? They’re one of the leading companies in the global and North American pet food markets.[1] They’re also one of the companies who used the term “human grade” ingredients. Having gone to court and successfully defending usage of such a claim.

Thus: Not only is their impact significant, serving thousands upon thousands of dogs worldwide; but so is their influence when it comes to dog nutrition practices. A review of such a brand is warranted!

Examined: Wellness Dog Food

  • dry

Is Wellness Dog Food Safe?

is wellness dog food safe

Let’s be honest, money and profit drive most companies these days.

But does that mean quality has to suffer? Perhaps as a result of cutting costs?

Not necessarily, many companies do all they can to ensure safety and quality of their product.

Wellness Pet Food seems to be one of these companies.

But, as with anything else, nobody is perfect.

When it comes to Wellness Pet Food’s track record, they’ve had five pet food recalls that we’ll address below in our Recalls Section. Three of the five recalls were dog food related.

Our standards, our promise

Wellness states that your dogs health is at the core of everything they do; which is why they have created a substantial quality assurance company program[2], guaranteeing the balance and safety of their products by adhering to:

  • wholesome, pure, authentic ingredients for a lifetime of wellbeing
  • rigid, uncompromising and detailed ingredient selection process
  • utilizing only the most respectable, trust-worthy, and conscientious suppliers
  • every ingredient is nutrient rich and carefully handled
  • rigid manufacturing procedures
  • meticulous sanitation of facilities
  • temperature monitoring and routine product tests
  • unsurpassed food safety programs
  • inspection of every supplier and testing of every ingredient.

Things Wellness AVOIDS:

  • GMOs
  • artificial flavors
  • artificial colors
  • artificial preservatives
  • artificial fillers
  • by-products
  • corn, wheat, and soy

Of course no company is going to criticize itself, so we looked around a bit to fact check the self-proclaimed benefits. Primarily we wanted to see what, if any, legal action was pending or settled; as a legal judgement is the only thing we will use to get as close to a “fact” as possible.

Lawsuit(s) related to Wellness Pet Food

  • Legal name: Zeiger et al v. WellPet LLC and Berwind Corp.
  • Case Number: 17-cv-4056, N. D. CA.
  • Proposed class file by: Zeiger, Daytrips, and Freeborn vs. WellPet LLC.[3]
  • Date filed: July 19, 2017.
  • Abstract: The proposed class action lawsuit alleges that Wellness Pet Food products contain dangerous amounts of arsenic and lead. Wellness Pet Food claims all amounts are well within safety margins.

Product(s) the lawsuit mentions:

  • Wellness CORE Adult Dry Ocean Whitefish, Herring Meal and Salmon Meal
  • Wellness Complete Health Adult Dry Whitefish and Sweet Potato

Outcome: The judge ruled that the plaintiffs cannot seek a nationwide class action lawsuit. They may continue to seek a class action within their state of California and on behalf of it’s residents, however.[4]

Important note: The court also rejected WellPet’s (Wellness Pet Food’s parent company) assertion that alleged misrepresentations on the labels of it’s products were just vague assertions and subjective opinions in nature; and thus not actionable.

We will continue to keep an eye on this lawsuit and update this section.

Bottom line: Many dog food companies out there make these safety claims, but when it comes to Wellness despite the long-term inevitable occurrences (such as voluntary recalls and even lawsuits), this dog food maker still has a long running good reputation with dog owners across the world. Perhaps it’s quality standards and promise to consumers as outlined above deserve credit for that.

Finally, here’s what Wellness Pet Food has to say on the topic:

Our food is carefully handled, carefully prepared and undoubtedly safe. ~ Wellness Pet Food

Behind the scenes: Let’s go behind the scenes of this highly regarded dog food maker and discover what makes them so special, shall we?

Who Makes Wellness Dog Food?

Who makes this pet food which offers wholesome nutrients to champions such as:

  • police dogs
  • guide dogs
  • show dogs
  • Alaskan-sled dogs
  • etc.

Let’s find out!

The brand, Wellness Pet Food, was introduced in 1997. But it’s roots extend far beyond that.

For over 100 years, this company has been striving towards doing whatever it takes in order to make the healthiest and most natural products for our furry friends. Let us trace it’s roots.

Old Mother Hubbard Baking Company

It all started out with a wholesome snack baked by Old Mother Hubbard Baking Company, intended for fisherman to eat while out at sea in Gloucester, MA. One of the sailors threw a biscuit to his dog, who chowed it down in no time; 90 years later, dogs around the world are still having the same experience. Resulting in the formation of Old Mother Hubbard Natural Dog Treats in 1926.

Then: In 1961, Old Mother Hubbard was purchased by a guy named Jim Scott, an animal nutrition professional, who ended up moving the company to Lowell, Massachusetts.

Wellness Pet Food

Fast forward to the 1990’s when his son Jim Scott Jr. heads the company and begins working with a team of veterinarians, food scientists, and experts on animal nutrition in developing a new brand of dog and cat food. The Wellness Pet Food brand. Which soon to become a well recognizable brand across the globe in countries/continents such as:

  • USA
  • Canada
  • Singapore
  • Australia
  • Hong Kong
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • Europe
  • Japan
  • Indonesia
  • and Malaysia.

WellPet LLC

Eventually (in 2008 to be exact) a new umbrella company was formed by a company who bought the Old Mother Hubbard, Wellness Pet Food, Holistic Select Natural Pet Food and Eagle Pack Natural Pet Food brands[5]. The company was named WellPet LLC and it’s slogan is:

Your pet’s well-being is at the heart of all we do, that’s why we do whatever it takes to make the healthiest natural products for the pets that depend on us. ~ WellPet

Later on in 2016, it went to acquire another family-owned brand by the name of Sojos, which offers a line of raw freeze-dried pet food. Additionally, in 2017, it acquired a dental dog chew manufacturing brand by the name of WHIMZEES.

Berwind Corporation

It’s only right that we also look into the company who owns everything regarding Wellness Pet Food, and that would be the Berwind Co. also known as Berwind-White Coal Mining Company. A sizable private American company which, as the name suggests, has historically been involved in the coal industry. Today, however, it is a conglomerate involved in all sorts of manufacturing and service companies.

Now: You are well informed as to how Wellness dog food came into existence, but what about how it is manufactured?! Let us now look inside the manufacturing facilities where all the kibble happens.

Where Is Wellness Dog Food Made?

where is wellpet dog food manufactured company facility

From what we were able to dig up online, Wellness is manufactured in Mishawaka, Indiana. In 2012 they opened the first phase of their $20 million dollar expansion project on the facility.

The plant: Originally built in 1976 and is of historic business significance to the region. The first expansion phase saw:

  • the doubling of production capacity
  • state-of-the-art quality and safety lab revamp
  • bringing of vast majority of manufacturing under one proprietary roof
  • addition of new packaging lines
  • addition of new testing equipment.

In 2016 the plant installed odor control to prevent strong smells from disrupting the neighborhood.

Where does Wellness source their ingredients from?

Since it’s not easy to find a clear answer, we’re going to assume that they, along with most other pet food makers, source their ingredients from various places, which may include global suppliers.

To find out more about the ingredients they use, Wellness Pet Food directs pet owners to review their Ingredient Dictionary, and/or contact them directly Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm ET at 800.225.0904.

So we did. Waiting on a reply, stay tuned . . .

Wholesome ingredients for a lifetime of wellbeing

Though it’s not explicitly stated on their website where they source their ingredients from, they do address and re-assure dog owners as to how they do it.

By putting each ingredient through a meticulous, rigid, and uncompromising selection process; Wellness ensures the review of quality, safety, and nutritional value. They claim to use only the finest ingredients (but so does everybody else). Excluding artificial flavors, preservatives, and undesirable chemicals.

Opting instead for a smaller number of authentic, pure, nutrient rich ingredients your dog thrives on. Wellness also states they believe in food you can trust, saying that their quality assurance program equates to the finest food for your dog that nature has to offer.

Producing rich and wholesome ingredients that sustain their nutritional integrity and natural quality; by scrutinizing every supplier and testing every ingredient.

Now: Now that you’ve learned who makes Wellness dog food and where, let’s see where you can purchase one of the many formulas out there.

Final say on Wellness dog food

The company that lives by the slogan “make every mealtime count,” certainly seems to be doing things the right way. We like the holistic commitment to your pets overall wellness, which is this company’s end goal.

WellPet Foundation

Another positive thing this company does is give back to the community. They are committed to supporting (through research, education, and action) non-profit organizations and activities that promote healthy and active pets.

Which is why in they established the WellPet Foundation in 2007, partnering with other organization like:

  • Conservation Canines
  • Human Animal Bond Research Institute
  • Great Dog Rescue of New England
  • Pet Sustainability Coalition
  • TerraCycle
  • and more.

What we’d like to see: In our research it was hard to find readily available in-depth information regarding ingredient sourcing and facility operations. A little more transparency when it comes to the actual manufacturing process would help solidify an already reputable brand with their consumers even further.
